North Middlesex University Hospital is a district general hospital located in the London Borough of Enfield.
The hospital, which is managed by North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, recently undertook a laboratory fit-out project in collaboration with our client, HSL (Health Services Laboratories).
The aim was to create a new Pathology Response Laboratory within a vacant floor area of approximately 650m2.

Scope of Work
The project involved a comprehensive fit-out of the designated area. This included the removal of all existing partitions and bed bays and the construction of a fully functional laboratory. Key elements of the project included:
- Stripping the existing area of all redundant elements.
- Installation of lightweight partitioning to define the laboratory space.
- Installation of suspended ceilings.
- Flooring and decoration to enhance aesthetics and functionality.
- Incorporation of an extensive range of laboratory benches with power and data provisions.
- Integration of staff welfare facilities within the designated area.

Challenges and Solutions
A close working relationship with the hospital trust was crucial, as the adjacent areas, as well as floors above and below, were still operational during the project. Keeping noise levels to a minimum was a top priority to ensure uninterrupted hospital functions. The following strategies were implemented:
- Effective Communication: Continuous coordination with the hospital trust to understand their ongoing operations and scheduling work accordingly.
- Noise Mitigation Measures: Implementation of noise control measures such as soundproofing, scheduling noisy tasks during quieter periods, and utilizing quieter construction methods.
- Flexible Working Hours: Adjusting working hours to minimize disruption to the hospital’s daily activities.
- Collaborative Approach: Maintaining constant communication and collaboration with the hospital trust to address any concerns and find mutually agreeable solutions.
Project Outcome
Through diligent planning and close collaboration, the laboratory fit-out project at North Middlesex Hospital was successfully executed.
The project, valued at £1.2 million, was completed within the agreed schedule of 20 weeks. The newly created Pathology Response Laboratory now serves as a critical facility within the hospital, enabling efficient and effective pathology services.
The seamless integration of the laboratory within a live hospital environment demonstrates the expertise and commitment of all involved parties in delivering a successful project while prioritising patient care and hospital operations.
